Arriving in Sweden

Welcome to Sweden!

Sweden has long been an open and accepting society, and international influences have shaped and enriched its culture.

Vikings, castles and Sami culture are examples of Sweden’s rich cultural history. Among Swedish traditions, Midsummer is best celebrated with dancing around leaf-decorated maypoles. It is an ancient tradition and the maypole has become a well-known national symbol, which goes back to Antique Rome and medieval Germany and France.

For centuries Sweden was an ethnically homogeneous country. Today Sweden is a multicultural country, and both native and foreign inhabitants share the beauty of Sweden; a long varied coastline, immensely beautiful countryside, dense forests, approximately 100 000 inland lakes and vast mountainous areas.

Kalmar

Kalmar is one of the oldest towns in Sweden, and thus rich on history. Old buildings have been preserved and the new ones have been adapted to fit into the old environment.

Kalmar Castle, the medieval part of the town with its cobbled streets, and the town’s picturesque centre are only some of the attractions that offer inspiration, relaxation and stimulation.

The town park is adjacent to the castle and a well-visited oasis, which 1985 was appointed as Sweden’s most beautiful town park. Here you will find many different plants such as bamboo, magnolia, tulip tree and walnut.

In Kalmar you have everything close at hand. You only need to cross the Öland Bridge to reach land, the island of the sun and the winds, with unique countryside and wildlife.

Climate

Northern Sweden has long, cold and snowy winters that start in October and last until May, but during the summer the sun shines around the clock. In southern Sweden the winters are milder and the summers are longer.

Time Zone

Sweden has Central European Time, GMT +1. Daylight saving time (GMT +2) applies from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October. Clock time is written according to the European system, e.g. 4 pm is written 16.00.
